Random Small Door

There's a big church on my way to work. I think it's St. Thomas Church.

And along the wall is this random door. You can't tell from the picture, but it's a small door- maybe 5 ft tall.
I don't know what, if anything, is behind that door.
But it captures my interest every time I pass it. Some days I try to figure out what it was once used for- such a small door.

Some days my imagination takes flight.
If you read any Mercedes Lackey, she has a series which involves secret societies of Elves, and some of those stories are set in NYC.

One day on my way home from work I imagined a story in which our hero (me) accidentally leaned against the door, and by some magic it opened. Then, when our hero was on the other side of the door, it closed and she found herself in a huge meadow. Lots of flowers, butterflies (no bees or stinging bugs though). Somewhere music was playing, and there would be dancing and beautiful pointy eared people moving gracefully around, doing whatever it is they do. And instantly our hero realized that Mercedes Lackey had hinted at the truth in her stories, and that this random small door was actually a hidden entrance to the Elves magical home...

And some days I wonder if they bricked up behind that door, its original use forgotten.

  1. Okay...so as if we didn't know this, but we are so in sync. LOL Did I ever tell you that when we would go see those castles in England, that I would stop and take pictures of all the old, wooden doors. I'm absolutely fascinated by them. And then, naturally, my story brain goes into flight, and I have created an entire new character who lived in this castle, behind that door...or something. :) I know you understand. :)

  2. Hi. I've just stumbled on your blog and I am so jealous. This door is just one small treasure -- and the amazing thing about NYC is there are an infinite number of them. Keep exploring, keep hunting, keep posting. I will be living vicariously.
